If you want to change the name to Maharlika, it means balls!

The native (native to the so-called Philippines) meaning is royalty. The Sanskrit origin is “maha lingam” or “great phallus“. Too bad.

Moro is also a name originating from the Spanish. Should the Moro people change their name too since you advocate not using Filipino?

True, the term Moro is derived from the word Moors. The Moors were African Muslims who ruled Spain for many years. Originally, Moro was a derogatory term for “Filipino” Muslims but was later adopted. I’m sure there are some Moro’s out there who do not like the name. It’s like they were saying, “OK, we are Moro but we will still never bow to you”. The difference between Moro and Filipino is that the Moro refused to bow down to the Spanish and anyone else. That was not the case for the Filipino. Based on those facts, I’m OK with Moro.

The name Philippines is embedded deeply in our rich culture. Getting rid of Philippines will erase it.

That is silly. Changing the name of our country will not erase our “rich” culture. The name “Philippines” would just be in the past.

Remember that we has a developing and thriving “rich” culture of our own long before the Spanish set foot on our soil. Many people mistakenly associate the landing of the Spanish with a birth of culture. That is far from true. We just bought into the lies that we were just uncivilized savages.

It will cost too much to change the name of the Philippines. Think about how many many materials such as books, signs and uniforms would have change. Don’t forget about the marketing cost. We would have to explain to the world why we are doing this.

It’s true that it will cost a lot but how much unnecessary things does the government today waste money on? This would be a good investment: to raise the national consciousness. Regarding cost, how much did we pay to be called the Philippines? How much was our slave labor worth?

Agreed but it might change our future. We are not trying to change the history. What happened, happened. We can choose to live it’s shadow or be proactive and finish what our ancestors could not. It took hundreds of years of years to condition our minds. It might take that that long to decondition.
