Why noPhilippines?

noPhilippines means that we want the Philippine government to officially change the name of our country. With this website, we hope to educate people on why we think it needs to be changed. Impossible you say? A few countries have done it. Sri Lanka used to be called Ceylon, the name given by the Portuguese.

We want to change the name of the country to once and for all escape the chains of colonialism. While we may by physically free, we are still bound by mental slavery. Every time we say Philippines, Filipino or anything derived from it such as Pinoy or Noypi, we are in essence bowing down and showing our allegiance to the ghost of King Philip II of Spain.

The term Filipino Pride is an oxymoron. It’s contradictory to celebrate so-called Philippine independence day from the Spanish and still call yourself a Filipino.

Thanks to international Filipino celebrities such as Manny Pacquaio, Batista (WWE), apl.de.ap (Black Eyed Peas) and Nicole Scherzinger (Pussycat Dolls), it’s very much in-style to be Filipino and boast your “Pinoy Pride”. You see Pinoys sporting Alibata tattoos hoping to either A) capture a part of their pre-Hispanic past or B) to be in-style. There’s also money to be made based on this false pride. Culture prophets/profits hawk their “Pinoy Pride” goods all boxed up in a nice convenient package usually in the form of a t-shirt. Real pride cannot be bought, it takes a true knowledge of self and a firm understanding of cause and effect. While the intention is good and the products are “cool”, the message might be misguided, blurry or downright false.

What we know as “Pinoy Pride” needs to be clearly defined. The difference between real pride and blind pride must be established.
